I guess I could also chuck an end mill directly into the 3-jaw as well, but that doesn't seem like it would work nearly as well as the holder of collet options.Īny thoughts on which method would be best? I'm trying to keep outlay to a minimum, as otherwise the money would be better spend on a mill. I have never used it (obtained with a used lathe), and don't foresee a use for me in the future. Pictures show other numbers (10-501, 10-502, and 8188, if I see it correctly) on item, but not 500A. It would be the most multi-purpose setup by far, as I have this nice 5C chuck sitting around, but no collets for it. Atlas Lathe Milling Attachment - 225 (Idaho Falls) Atlas lathe milling attachment. The chuck adds quite a bit of length off the headstock spindle, and I'm sure would be the least stiff option. They aren't useful for anything other than holding end mills.ĥC collets in the collet chuck I have for this lathe. These will likely have a little more give than a collet, but would offer faster end mill changes. Would require machining a drawbar and would be the slowest method, but probably the most rigid, and perhaps the cheapest.Įnd-mill holders with 3MT shanks. I have three obvious options:ģMT collets in the headstock. My question is regarding the end mill holding method. However, I have occasional need to mill something, and I would like to get a few end mills and be able to do these jobs myself. I understand that milling on a lathe, especially a small one such as this, is not going to be a quick or enjoyable process. Here is an old photo of my old Atlas milling attachment just in case anyone wants to see what they look like. This set up is a lot more solid than my old milling attachment and it is easier to mount work in. I mounted a tool makers vice on the plate with some slides I saved off some jigs I found in a dumpster years ago. I still need to drill and tap some more holes so the bar can be turned 90 degrees or 45 degrees to provide different orientations for the vice. This bar is clamped into a Phase II tool holder. The 3/8"x1/2" steel bar is screwed to the plate with 1/4-20 socket head cap screws and is counter bored so the heads fit flush. The first photo is of the mounting plate I made. Because there is a Phase II AXA size tool post on all three lathes I decided to make the milling attachment fit a Phase II tool holder and would use the Phase II tool post for my up and down adjustment. It the past I had used a Phase II tool Holder to hold small parts like firing pins to do light milling on. I have never used it (obtained with a used lathe), and dont foresee a use for me in the future. My old attachment could only be used with my South Bend 9N, but I wanted one that could be used on my 9N, my LeBlond or my friends 10L. He got mad and gave me the only neutral feed back I ever had on Ebay.

I told him I would give him a full refund if he returned everything to me. He wanted me to send him $50 back to compensate him for the damage.

The Post Office was not excessively careful with the package and the new owner emailed that the casting on the grinding attachment was cracked in the mail and sent me a photo of the box that looked like it went through a war. I was disappointed when every thing brought just over $150 but that is the chance you take with Ebay and I cheerfully packaged everything up with all the packing material that would fit with all the parts in a Priority Mail box. and screws along with a grinding attachment that let a die grinder be used with the milling attachment. So I was hoping for at least that when I put my milling attachment, 9N cross slide with nut, gib. The week before I put mine on Ebay one just like sold for $259. I noticed milling attachments were bring big bucks on Ebay and I was short of money because of lack of work so I decided to sell it.
There was a lot of adjustment possibilities with that milling attachment, but it was not solid enough and milling with it was not a "feel good" experience. Long ago I adapted an Atlas milling attachment to work on my South Bend 9N Model A.
